There was once a guy who was very much in love with a certain girl. This guy was so romantic that he folded 1,000 pieces of paper-cranes as a gift to his girl. He wished to it that their love to be forever. Although, at that time he was just a small time start up with a company of his own and his future didn’t seem too bright. Still, they were very happy together. Until one day, his girl told him she was moving to Paris and might never come back. She also told him that she couldn’t see a future for the both of them. So she said to him that they should part ways. Heartbroken beyond words, the guy agreed. But this fueled a part inside him that made him want to succeed. He regains his confidence, worked hard day and night, pushing himself, his body and mind to the limits just to make something out of him and to unknowingly and unsuccessfully get his mind off of the girl.
A year or so later and after a lot of hard work and with the help of his friends, the guy becomes one of the top businessmen in the country. His words to himself were that, You never fail until you stop trying. He decided to visit his old town and catch up on his old place. He set out on a vacation there. He barely recognized the place cos instead of the town having become bigger, it had grown quieter than the energetic one he once walked with the girl he loved. One rainy Saturday, while he was driving down to the old church to visit the grave of his father; he saw an elderly couple sharing an umbrella walking to the same destination. Even with the umbrella, they were still drenched. It didn’t take him long to realize they were his girl’s parents. And old flame and memories of the day when she left him came flooding back. With his mind set on getting back at them, he drove slowly beside the couple, wanting them to spot him in his luxury sedan. He wanted them to see that he wasn’t the same anymore; that he was a rich man now, with his own company and all. That he had made it. He drove past them as they didn’t seem to see him. He parked a little bit down the road to the church. As he got out of the car, He saw the couple were walking towards the same church. And as he watched, they walked to the cemetery. He followed them. He saw them looking at a grave as the mother lean to her husband and sob. His heart knew something, but his mind couldn’t process or accept it. He inched closer and… He saw the name of his girl engraved on the stone, a photograph of her sealed onto it, smiling just as sweetly as ever at him from her tombstone. And he saw the same model of paper cranes cut out in stone on it, beside her grave.
Her parents saw him. He asked them what had happened. They explained that she did not leave for Paris at all. She was diagnosed with advance Pancreatic carcinoma, a cancer. She always believed that he will make it someday even when they didn’t. And she didn’t want him to keep living under the shadow of her death. And she did not want to be an obstacle. Therefore she had chose to leave him cos she knew that he wouldn’t if she told the truth. She had wanted them to put something similar to his paper cranes beside her, because, if the day comes when fate were to bring him to her again, he would know that she always loved him and will always love him. Her last words were to tell him that she was his and his alone till the very end. And that as he wished for that day, that their love will last forever now.
He stood there watching the picture of her and crying. His words to her, “I know you are still here with me. I love you.”
Few of us realize that the thing we take for granted are just a breath away from leaving us. Be careful.
Find time to realize that there is one person who means so much to you, for you might wake up one morning and end up losing that person who you thought meant nothing to you. Just because someone doesn’t love you the way you want them to, doesn’t mean they don’t love you with all they have. Once you have loved, you will always be in love. For what is in your mind may escape or fade but what is in your heart will remain forever.
The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside them knowing you can’t have them.
